DOROTHY SKLAR (1906-1996)...Born: New York City, NY.
Studied: University of Southern California (Los Angeles), Chouinard Art Institute (Los Angeles).
Member: California Water Color Society.
Dorothy Sklar's family moved to Southern California when she was about four years old. She was raised in the Los Angeles area and attended USC with a major in the education field.
While working as a teacher in Santa Monica during the 1930's, Dorothy took instruction in watercolor painting from Millard Sheets and Dong Kingman. By the early 1940's she had quit teaching and was painting and exhibiting in art shows across the country with the California Water Color Society. Most of the time Sklar painted right on location from the inside of her parked car. Old houses and street scenes in the East Los Angeles area were the subjects in many of these works. Dorothy Sklar was an active member of the board of directors of the California Water Color Society for many years.
