Cornelis Botke immigrated to the United States when he was nineteen and lived in the Midwest for twelve years. He and his wife, Jessie Arms Botke, moved to California and lived in Carmel for several years before settling in near Santa Paula in 1927. His works were primarily landscapes of the rural areas near his home, painted in a representational style. He was an accomplished oil painter and received many awards for etchings and block prints.
